The national average can mislead you: why your region matters when comparing salaries in Czechia
When you compare your salary with the “average in Czechia”, you are comparing yourself with the whole country, including regions where the same work is paid differently than where you live. For some professions that shifts the result by tens of percent, for others hardly at all. It depends on what you do.
Region matters, but differently for each profession
According to Czech Statistical Office data for 2025, average salaries differ between regions in every occupation group. The gap between the lowest and highest region is about 12% for elementary occupations, about 44% for professionals and over 70% for managers.
| Occupation group | Whole country | Typical region outside Prague | Lowest and highest region |
|---|---|---|---|
| Managers | CZK 113,226 | CZK 100,410 (whole country 13% higher) | CZK 85,600 Karlovy Vary – CZK 148,435 Prague |
| Professionals | CZK 74,208 | CZK 64,264 (whole country 15% higher) | CZK 59,728 Karlovy Vary – CZK 85,870 Prague |
| Technicians and associate professionals | CZK 55,209 | CZK 52,695 (whole country 5% higher) | CZK 49,468 Karlovy Vary – CZK 60,682 Central Bohemia |
| Clerical support workers | CZK 41,820 | CZK 39,871 (whole country 5% higher) | CZK 37,128 Zlín – CZK 44,702 Prague |
| Service and sales workers | CZK 36,452 | CZK 36,529 (whole country about the same) | CZK 35,368 Moravian-Silesian – CZK 39,663 Prague |

What it means
- Managers and professionals: the national figure is about 13–15% higher than in a typical region, mainly because these professions are paid much more in Prague. A developer or accountant outside Prague may wrongly see themselves as “below average”.
- Technicians and clerks: a difference of about 5%, the national figure is usable and your region just refines it.
- Trades, machine operators, services and elementary occupations: the national figure matches a typical region. Regional differences still exist, though: craft workers in Central Bohemia earn about 30% more than in the Karlovy Vary Region.
- There are exceptions elsewhere too: Central Bohemia is even above Prague for technical and manual jobs, and the South Moravian Region (Brno) is well above other regions for professionals.
Part of the differences also comes from what kind of work is done in each region: many company headquarters are in Prague, where managers and professionals often lead larger teams and budgets. Moving will not get you the whole difference, but it shows how far you can go.
When to compare with your region and when with the whole country
- You work for a local company: compare with your region, that is where your pay is decided.
- You work remotely for a company in Prague or Brno: use figures from its region. The same work is usually paid more there.
- You are thinking of moving or commuting: compare both regions, the salary difference may cover the cost of travel.
